A quarantine facility designed around animal welfare and biosecurity protocols with a calm operational order, Singapore's Animal Quarantine Centre transforms a tight site into a multi-storey quarantine facility where animals can be safely separated to prevent the spread of animal borne diseases in Singapore. Lush greenery provide a sense of being in the outdoors, countering the feeling of isolation that quarantine may give.
The functions of the previous quarantine centre housed at a sprawling 8.4 hectare site in Sembawang had to be condensed into a 1.75 hectare site where the project is situated.
Animals such as cats, dogs and small mammals which are imported from overseas would have to undergo quarantine in this facility to contain the spread of exotic diseases such as rabies. They would be housed in individual kennels / catteries for observation and monitoring for 10 days or 30 days depending on the country of import.
During this period of quarantine, pet owners are allowed to visit their pets at designated times to clean and groom their pets. For dogs, the brief required dog runs to be provided for pet owners to be able to take their dogs out for exercise.
In addition to the various spaces listed above for the upkeep of pets, the brief required that cats and dogs be kept segregated from each other and greenery was to be incorporated well in the project.
Height constraints were imposed by CAAS and DSTA which limited the height of the project to 4 storeys.
