Changi Chapel & Museum commemorates the valiance of British soldiers on our shores as prisoners of war during the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942-1945.

A key addition is a memorial space within the chapel. A glass canopy with logs hanging over the central chapel courtyard holds silence, memory and light in careful balance. Conveying a sense of oppression and heaviness of the war, the space and hanging art invites one to reflect on the perseverance of the soldiers throughout their period of enforced confinement.

Mass Engineered Timber (MET) was used for the columns and beams of the glass canopy in the courtyard, as well as for the hanging logs of the courtyard. The usage of MET complements the aesthetic of the timber chapel which is the central focus of the space. The MET columns rest upon 2 new rows of planter boxes, lining the sides of the courtyard, to provide a sense of serenity and comfort in this memorial space.
